smallfrog eats is a home bakery operated by me, danielle currier-graves, a native houstonian and life-long frog enthusiast. i sell freshly baked, prepackaged homemade goods in accordance with the cottage food production standards of the texas health and safety code. i can be found in parks by day, by night among houston's bar scene. follow @smallfrogeats on instagram to find out where i'll be next.
do i like baking? sure. is it my passion? no. frogs are.
frogs are threatened buy pollution, climate change, and habitat loss, which are all consequences of the expansion of the human-built environment. a portion of all proceeds will be donated to save the frogs, an organization dedicated to frog conservation. the rest will go to me, an individual dedicated to frog conservation, to offset the costs of living while i study engineering, focusing on sustainable design and zero-waste solutions.
no.
just fresh, soft, scrumptious bread, carefully crafted into whimsical bug shapes.
for almost as long as i can remember, frogs have been my favorite animal. when i was four years old, my mom won a coupon for a free stuffed animal from toys r us, and she came home with this big, blue frog, about as tall as i was at the time, and that was it. my mom was relieved i liked it, she said i didn't care for teddy bears, and human dolls made me cry.
people ask me all the time, "why frogs?" but for the life of me, i cant think of a single reason why not. the more i learn about them, the more amazed i am. they are absolutely fantastic little animals who play a critical role in ecosystems all over the world, being both predator and prey. they are able to thrive in earth's harshest environments, from the frigid arctic circle to the scorching deserts of namibia, from the crushing depths of lake titicaca to the soaring mountaintops of southern china. they are ancient, with genetic lineages stretching back hundreds of millions of years, but also amazingly adaptive, able to evolve quickly in response to environmental changes. some frogs are beautiful, brightly colored, and chalk full of deadly poison. others are...less "conventionally attractive," but just might hold a cure to diabetes!
frogs have been revered by humanity across time and space, often auspicious signals of good fortune, transformation, renewal, and fertility. ancient egyptians worshiped the frog-headed goddess heqet, and the frog hieroglyph eventually became the logo for this very enterprise. despite their many miraculous attributes, modern cultures tend to hold a negative view of our amphibious friends. the myth that toads cause warts (yes, it is a myth) among other such nasty rumors, is so pervasive that many people are disgusted by, or even fear them. in addition to their unfortunate reputations, frogs are facing a world-wide extinction epidemic. between climate change, pollution, disease, and habitat loss, the future of countless frog species is uncertain.
all these threats to frogs are either caused or exacerbated by the steady expansion of the human world into the natural world, but it doesn't have to be this way. sustainable design incorporates alternative techniques and modern technology to create a human-built environment (cities, towns, farms, etc.) which doesn't compete with the plants and animals around it. we can build our human world to be mutually beneficial to the natural environment, and in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the world's most vulnerable people, we need to do it soon. i want to be a part of reinventing the interface between the human and natural worlds, not just for the sake of frog-kind, but for all of humanity too. unless the way our species interacts with the planet changes significantly, every living thing will continue to suffer.
importantly, though, there is always hope. we can restore our natural resources, we can build more resilient communities, and we will adapt, just like frogs do. never let any smug billionaire convince you the earth is f*****, and escaping the planet is our only hope. i mean, i wanna explore space just as bad as the next guy, but the earth is our foundation. we can't build an interstellar future on crumbling infrastructure. don't let anyone sell you unrealistic promises of some future martian utopia, invest instead in real solutions to our problems today. in the interest of developing those solutions, i've been working towards a engineering degree since 2015, but it is very expensive. this project is what allows me to study, so your support really means the world to me. i truly couldn't do it without you, so thank you very much for reading :)
no.
for some reason, i can't eat frogs, even in effigy. brain won't let me.
yes, i've seen the videos, yes they look cute. but to imagine a frog bread, lovingly wrought by mine own hands, being torn apart by a total stranger, or worse, left to rot, forgotten in the back of a pantry... the perish the thought.
but, guess what frogs eat? bugs. hence, bug bread.
smallfrog eats bug bread.
